Hi! I'm Jake

You got any plans for this summer?

Published almost 3 years ago • 3 min read

Hello!

It's been a little while hasn't it? Summer is well under way here at JP Headquarters as we blur the line between work and play every day.

We wrapped up recording all the lectures for Children's Book Pro, then I went camping, then came home and organized my studio, and spent a day at the lake learning how to wake surf. Work hard, play hard, right?

Got a couple more trips planned this summer including visits to D.C., Philly, and New York.

That means real work has to get done this week and next, so I don't neglect anything while I'm out of the studio.

Here's 5 things I thought you'd appreciate this weekend:

1) Art Round Up

From the Art Department

Snake mech design for a comic I’m working on:

My old drawing stand by: a robot drawn with a 05 micron and a vermillion pencil. Never lets me down.⁣

2) Skull Chaser: Blaster For Hire T-Shirt

From the Bureau of Commerce, Division of Products and Services

I'm getting some shirts made!

Skull Chaser, inter-galactic corpse of mystery. He's not after power, he doesn't want to get rich, he just wants to watch the criminal underworld burn.⁣

I salute the genius who invented the t-shirt. This individual wanted to cover their upper body with a simple one piece garment, but who also wanted look cool doing so and in the process created the greatest invention of the 20th century.⁣

I'm feeling a little inspired, so I'm throwing my hat in the ring and making some shirts of my own now. ⁣

Wearing this shirt might not make you an inter-galactic bounty hunter, but you'll feel cool that's for sure...and at the end of the day what more could you want?⁣

Product details:⁣

- This is a pre-order. Pre-order ends Sunday night, June 27th. Shirts ship in early August⁣ (maybe even sooner?)
- Waterbased ink printed on 100% airlume combed and ringspun cotton.⁣
- Soft, permanent silkscreen printing. Not print on demand.⁣
- Unisex only⁣

3) Earth Houses

From the Architecture Desk

Peter Vetsch's Earth Houses are just about the coolest type of dwelling I've seen. You can see more here: LINK

Take a minute to check out the interiors.

If I had the means I'd build one of these out in the desert here in AZ.

4) The Bizarrely Creative World of Mid-Century American Roadside Attractions

From the Department of Interestingness

I found an incredible collection of photos of theme parks and roadside amusements from the 50s and 60s. Check out the album here: LINK

I've always had a fondness for weird stuff people build on the side of highways here in the U.S. There's a beauty in the wonkiness of the designs. Many of these attractions are 80% childlike magic and 20% fever nightmare, built with backyard engineering by people with a vision.

I don't know what kind of creative fodder is here for me, I just like looking at this stuff. Who knows if any of this will show up in my work...

But you better believe if I owned a spot of land along a highway in the middle of nowhere I'd build something like this on it.

5) Well isn't this the cutest Off Road vehicle you've ever seen?

From the Office of Wheels:

I know Argo is going for tough, heavy-duty, and manly with this thing, but the proportions are so darn cute I can't help but thing of a little truck my kid just made out of LEGO when I look at this set of wheels.

Still...I want one.

Might be cool with a NASA paint job, and make it look like something you'd tour the moon with.

That's all for this week. Thank you for reading this newsletter and hope you have a great weekend!

-Jake
